09/23/21: TwitchCon’s 2022 return; DreamHack Winter to open doors; Riot’s big promotion

Thursday September 23, 2021 Good morning! This is your weekly Esports Brief. TwitchCon is back, as Twitch formally unveiled plans to return to in-person (although remaining “flexible”) events for the gathering in 2022 with date for both North American and European TwitchCons revealed via Twitter. North American TwitchCon will take place in San Diego in October of next year, while Amsterdam plays host to the European version next July.

In bringing back the event, which missed both 2020 as well as this year’s version, Twitch stated that with 2021 serving as the company’s biggest year of viewership growth and content creation. TwitchCon 2022 would serve as an outlet for new streamers in a move to “meet the communities they’ve created or been welcomed into.” COMPETITION Speaking of a return, DreamHack comes back to the Elmia Congress Center in Jönköping, Sweden for DreamHack Winter from Nov. 25-28. The LAN-only event will “celebrate DreamHack’s roots and beginnings” with four days of LAN activities, a small Expo, and a Main Stage with the event limited to 3222 LAN guests who will be required to show proof of vaccination or take an on-site Covid test upon arrival. The last pre-pandemic festival was DreamHack Anaheim in February 2020. “DreamHack has always been a place where you can come to connect, explore, win, play, and be yourself — so to be able to offer our first in-person in Sweden, where DreamHack began, means a lot to us,” said Marcus Lindmark, President DreamHack, SVP Project and Event Operations at ESL Gaming. “Gaming brought, and kept, us together over the last year and a half, so we know how much our visitors have missed these festivals and the community they offer. We have followed the guidance of health officials to implement some safety measures that we believe will allow everyone to have a safe experience at DreamHack Winter.”

Riot Games’ first-ever Wild Rift Horizon Cup will land in Singapore starting November 13. The top 10 teams to qualify through the regional qualifiers will be headed to the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre to fight for the first international title, with the Finals taking place on Nov. 21.

The Arena World Championship Grand Finals kicks off September 25, with teams battling it out to determine the best of the best across Europe and North America, with competition starting at 1p ET on Saturday and Sunday on YouTube. Four teams in each region enter the arena for their share of the $300,000 prize pool and the prestigious title of AWC: Shadowlands 2021 Grand Finals Champions. Casting duties will go to Elliott “Venruki” Venczel, Sid “Supatease” Compston, Gillian “Eiya” Long and Mohammed “Ziqo” Beshir.

Valve announced that Dota 2 fans will, after all, be able to attend The International 10, although in a limited capacity with group stage competition set to start on Oct. 7. The event will run in Bucharest, Romania, with tickets going on sale starting Sept. 22. Valve and its organizing partners are requiring every attendee to be at least 10 days past their final vaccination shot. All attendees will need to show proof of vaccination status and a valid ID.

Overwatch League is adding fuel to the postseason, announcing that Blizzard will reveal Overwatch 2 updates live during the Grand Finals on Sept. 25. Content will include an OW2 exhibition match and looks at new looks and reworks for Sombra and Bastion.

The Clash Royale League World Finals 2021 will run Dec. 3-5, according to a Supercell announcement. Thirty-two players from around the world will compete for a share of the $1,020,000 prize pool. The event will become the first individual world championship for Clash Royale since the Crown Championship World Finals in 2017. PLATFORMS
PlayVS locked in a partnership with Special Olympics North America to serve as the official high school esports league operator stateside for Special Olympics Unified esports. With the deal, PlayVS will provide the platform and support a dedicated Unified esports league for Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools and students.

Esports Entertainment Group and its tournament platform Esports Gaming League are teaming with Gears of War developer The Coalitionfor the EGL Open Series. Spanning nine months, the tournament will run on EGL’s platform where operators can track player performances, rankings as well as the leaderboard. The EGL Open Series final is set to take place in June 2022.

G3 Esports partnered with Comtrade Gaming. The two companies will collaborate to provide player account management and backend infrastructure for G3’s upcoming esports wagering platform.

Also teaming up are Super League Gaming and Production Resource Group.The partnership aims to provide a full spectrum of event support to the esports community. FuzzyBot, a new independent game development studio, raised a $3.5M Seed Round led by BITKRAFT Ventures with participation from Sisu Games Ventures and 1Up Ventures. The capital will be used to scale the team and further accelerate development of their first game. Founded by Electronic Arts (EA) veterans Tatyana Dyshlova, former Lead Producer at EA, and Max Spielberg, former Design Director at EA, the new studio will look to create cross-genre, co-op games.
