09/16/21: ESL Pro Tour shifts gears; RLCS spreads its wings; Tempest Luminaries revealed
| Thursday September 16, 2021 Good morning! This is your weekly Esports Brief. ESL cemented plans for the ESL Pro Tour circuit, lining up a slew of events for its CS:GO slate for the remainder of 2021 as well as for 2022, marked by changes to the structure of the ESL Pro Tour circuit, and an expansion of the ESL Pro League. The company dangles over $5 million in prize money and is projecting well over 200 million viewing hours for the slate. The move also sees DreamHack Open events now shifting fully under the ESL moniker, renamed to ESL Challenger. The ESEA Premier, meanwhile will now be known as the ESL Challenger League.|
There will be three ESL Pro Tour Masters and Championship events in the rest of 2021, including IEM Fall, and two Challenger tournaments. 2022, meanwhile, would see six Masters tournaments that include IEM stops in the US, Katowice, Cologne, and China, with Challengers competitions spanning the US, Spain, Australia, and the Netherlands plus four Challenger League seasons. COMPETITION Meanwhile, the Rocket League Championship Series is making its largest expansion in history for the 2021-22 season, expanding to three new regions for the upcoming RLCS season: Asia-Pacific North; Asia-Pacific South; and Middle East & North Africa. With this expansion, every region playing in the RLCS 2021-22 season will now be playing the same format. Among the headlines in format changes – the season will once again be divided into Fall, Winter, and Spring Splits, leading to the Rocket League World Championship. Every Regional and every Major in each Split will have 16 teams, among other updates. The Rocket League World Championship will have two main stages: the new World Championship Wildcard and the World Championship Main Event with eight teams auto-qualifying to the Main Event, while 16 teams will qualify for the World Championship Wildcard.
Riot dealt plans for Teamfight Tactics Reckoning Worlds, set to begin on Oct. 1, and pitting 20 competitors against each other from around the world. The event will be digital due to travel restrictions.
The Global Esports Federation cemented plans for the very first Global Esports Tour, partnering with FACEIT with plans to showcase Hearthstone, PUBG: Mobile, and CS:GO through a trio of stops in Los Angeles, Riyadh, and Dubai. Competitors will vy for a share of $500,000 in prize money across the three events with play beginning Sept. 27. In addition, the GEF will commit another $500,000 to its Global Social Impact Initiatives
Today starts the PUBG Continental Series 5 Americas Grand Final, with the event running each Thursday and Friday over the next three weeks. Sixteen teams from North America and Latin America will compete for qualification points and a share of the $250,000 prize pool.
