09/09/21: Asian Games cement esports lineup; Fortnite’s new play; FaZe Clan goes to Bat


Medias First Morning Read Thursday September 9, 2021 Good morning! This is your weekly Esports Brief. The Olympic Council of Asia revealed the slate of titles that will serve as an official medal sport at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September 2022. Overall, the portion will feature eight medal events, plus two demonstration games. These will include; Arena of Valor Asian Games Version; Dota 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2; EA Sports FIFA branded soccer games; HearthStone; League of Legends; PUBG Mobile Asian Games Version; and Street Fighter V. COMPETITION Fortnite developer Epic Games rolled out plans for competitive gaming in Chapter 2 – Season 8, including the launch of the first-ever FNCS Grand Royale, which offers a $5 million prize pool to qualified players. The season 8 finals will take place on Oct. 30-31, while the Grand Royale is lining up a targeted date of Nov. 12, serving as a trio tournament.

With its 2021 playoff field set, Overwatch League is already looking toward 2022, announcing that the next season of the league will begin in April, and confirming to multiple outlets that the new season will use an “early build” of Overwatch 2. The OWL Grand Finals will be held on Sept. 25.

Esports tournament software and management company Mainline is beefing up its partnership with CSL Esports and Playfly Sports for their properties to run branded esports tournaments through their respective schools with the Univ. of Southern California on deck to become the first Playfly Sports Properties school to run events, courtesy of an esports tournament kicking off Sept. 30. Mainline will provide end-to-end tournament organization and execution open to all students enrolled at the Univ. of Southern California. “USC Sports Properties is thrilled to partner with McDonald’s as the title sponsor for this and future events. Dota 2’s The International is still on deck to take place next month in Bucharest, Romania, according to Valve, but the publisher is still unclear on whether fans will be able to attend in person. “At long last, the top Dota teams in the world will gather this October to wage the tenth battle to claim the Aegis of Champions,” the company posted. “We had hoped to release ticket information by now, but the Delta variant has been an added challenge as we work to navigate hosting a live event as safely as possible. With circumstances constantly changing, we want to be careful to make a well-informed and safe decision regarding ticket sales closer to the event.”

WePlay is launching its first Rocket League event, titled the WePlay Esports Invitational. The event begins on Sept. 16 and will see 16 teams from around th world play for its $100,000 prize pool. The event will feature eight teams from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, along with eight teams from North America.

Riot Games is expanding its VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) Game Changers program to the EMEA region, lignin up three new tournaments set to take place over the next three months. The initiative looks to “foster an inclusive environment for competition and create safe opportunities for women to compete without fear of identity or gender-based harassment.” The first tournament will take place from Sept. 27-3, followed by events on Oct. 25-31 and Nov. 15-21. “Right now, the esports industry is suffering from a severe lack of female representation at pro level. If we want to inspire more women to pursue their esports dreams, we need to take direct action to make these games more accessible, and create a level playing field for them to enter in years to come. We want VCT Game Changers EMEA to be that stepping stone for women, in the EU to show off their VALORANT skills and compete in a fair, safe environment but still within the ecosystem, said Vera Wienken, Brand Manager DACH for Riot Games and a leader of the VCT Game Changers EMEA initiative.

Speaking of Riot, the 2021 League of Legends World Championshipwill reportedly run from Oct. 5-Nov. 6 in Reykjavík, Iceland, at the Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena, per Dot Esports. The event will be broken down into five stages, with the play-in stage taking place from Oct. 5-9 with the group stage running from Oct. 11-18. The playoffs will begin with the quarterfinals on Oct. 22-25, semifinals on Oct. 30-31, and finals on Nov. 6. No crowd will be allowed to attend.

Electronic Arts revealed plans for Year 2 of the Apex Legends Global Series, and revealed the first 100 of the final 200 teams confirmed for the inaugural ALGS Pro League. Featuring top Apex Legends stars representing decorated and world renowned esports orgs, a prize pool of $500,000 and qualification to the Split 1 Playoffs is up for grabs with the start of the ALGS Pro League Regular Season Split 1 on Oct. 16. Beginning Sept. 11, squads from around the world compete in weekly competition with the hope of earning one of the remaining 100 ALGS Pro League entries, finalizing the elite field of 200 squads. North American representatives will include squads from Cloud9, TSM, NRG, G2 Esports, Team Liquid, Counter Logic Gaming, Complexity Gaming, XSET, and more. In addition, the org is launching a talent search for its global series.

Com2uS announced that applications are now open for Lost Centuria World Championship 2021, the first official global tournament of Summoners War: Lost Centuria. The main event will take place on November 6 via livestream on YouTube. The event will also be live streamed in 13 different languages.
